The present article looks at the stratigraphical documentation process from the point of view of users. The two central implications of the present discussion is to problematise how archaeological documentation informs, and secondly, if archaeological documentation is a 'remnant', what type of record the documentation is? The conclusion is that it is important to document the documentation process, but similarly to an excavation, even this meta-documentation work should be guided by explicit questions and statement of purpose.
